Six sectors, one short list of jobs a measurement is actually doing. Whatever the plant makes, a critical instrument is almost always in one of these four roles — and which role it is decides how tight the tolerance has to be, how often it is worth checking, and what the certificate has to prove.
It decides what is invoiced
Custody transfer at a loading rack, a supply meter at the gate, steam or water sub-metering between departments. Here the error is money moving in one direction, and the counterparty is entitled to ask for evidence. These points get the tightest tolerance and the shortest interval — and the deviation on the certificate has to be defensible line by line.
It has to close a balance
Inputs against outputs, tank inventory against throughput, dosing against recipe. When a mass balance stops closing, the argument is about which instrument is wrong, and seniority is not an answer. Calibrating both ends of the balance turns the argument into arithmetic — which is why several points on one line are usually verified in a single visit.
It protects something
A flow switch on a pump seal, a temperature on a reactor interlock, pressure on a relief path. A safety function assumes its measurement is still true; an undetected drift is a protection that will not act when it is needed. Where the loop is part of a safety case, the check is documented as a proof test rather than a note in a logbook.
It sets the product
Pasteurisation temperature, dosing ratio, blend flow, cure profile. Drift here does not trip an alarm — it produces a batch that is out of specification and a quality record that says everything was fine. As-found values are what tell you whether the records already issued since the last calibration can be relied on.
If your sector is not listed, the underlying work is the same — describe your critical measurement points and we will tell you how they are best verified. And if a point turns out not to be in any of these four roles, that is worth knowing too: it is usually a candidate for a longer interval, not a shorter one.
